5 Essential Grooming Tips Every New Dog Owner Needs to Know
Welcome to dog parenthood! Bringing a new dog home is an exciting milestone, but it also comes with essential responsibilities—and grooming is right near the top of the list. Proper grooming isn’t just about keeping your dog looking good; it is a vital part of their overall health and well-being.
Here are 5 essential grooming tips every new dog owner should master.
1. Establish a Regular Brushing Routine
Brushing your dog’s coat removes loose hair, prevents painful mats, and distributes natural oils throughout their skin.
Short-haired breeds: Brush once a week using a rubber curry brush or bristle brush.
Long-haired or double-coated breeds: Brush 3 to 4 times a week using a slicker brush and an undercoat rake.
2. Don’t Over-Bathe Your Dog
While it is tempting to wash your dog every time they get a little dirty, over-bathing strips away natural protective skin oils, leading to dry, itchy skin.
Bathing your dog once every 4 to 6 weeks is usually sufficient unless they roll in something particularly smelly.
Always use a pH-balanced dog shampoo—never human shampoo.
3. Start Nail Trimming Early
Long nails can cause discomfort, altered gait, and eventual joint issues.
Trim your dog’s nails every 3 to 4 weeks.
If you hear their nails clicking on hard floors, it’s time for a trim.
Be cautious of the "quick" (the blood supply inside the nail) to avoid causing pain or bleeding.
4. Keep Ears Clean and Dry
Ear infections are common in dogs, especially those with floppy ears or those who love to swim.
Check your dog’s ears weekly for redness, bad odor, or buildup.
Clean them using a vet-approved ear-cleaning solution and a cotton pad. Never insert cotton swabs directly into the ear canal.
5. Make Dental Care a Daily Habit
Periodontal disease affects a vast majority of dogs by age three. Preventive care is essential for long-term health.
Brush your dog’s teeth daily or at least three times a week using dog-friendly toothpaste (poultry or peanut butter flavors work great!).
Complement brushing with approved dental chews.
